Salary: £8 to £10 per hour (Depends on Experience)

Role description

The Assistant Chef supports and provides cover for the Chef/Manager and assists in promoting and developing food quality to the highest standards.

Our client is one of the leading education institution in London and their catering team provides a full food and drink service for up to 500 students from Monday to Friday year-round, mostly a la carte but also as set meals for student groups who have pre-booked meals. During the summer, catering is also required on Saturday mornings. Lunch is the busiest time, with different classes having staggered times, to cope better with large summer numbers. Students also need drinks and snacks at break–times between lessons. As our students come from all corners of the globe, we try to cater for a wide range of tastes and diets, with Asian, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and Latin American dishes regularly available, in addition to more familiar British and European menus.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide a happy, warm, friendly and helpful attitude to our customers, combined with efficiency and high standards of hygiene at all times.
  • Help to promote & continually improve the service & standards with the rest of the catering team.
  • Comply with the statutory Food Hygiene, Fire, Health and Safety regulations and ensure correct documentation is available for inspection at all times.
  • Assist the Chef/Manager in producing a high standard menu that is seasonal, well-presented, cost-efficient and compliant with food safety regulations.
  • Ensure that all services are available at the required time and meet the agreed standards.
  • Maintain a high standard of cleanliness (clean as you go) and use cleaning products in accordance with COSSH training; observe cleaning rotas and ensure adherence to it all times.
  • Assist in the monthly stock take.
  • Assist the Chef/Manager in ensuring correct rotation of stock with minimum wastage.
  • To ensure that all food production meets Food Safety and Health and Safety Undertake any special functions, including those that may occur outside of normal working hours.
  • Carry out any reasonable request by a member of the management team.
  • Participate in catering management meetings and any pre/post daily briefings.

Attend any training courses as required, including those that may be carried outside of normal working hours.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate:

  • Varied catering background; majority in contract catering
  • Kitchen management skills (menu planning, budgets etc)
  • Ability to manage a team and engender team spirit
  • Ability to cope with a crisis and make decisions
  • Excellent oral, listening and written communication skills
  • Pro-active, self organised, innovative and flexible
  • Merchandising skills
  • Good written and spoken English

Formal qualifications:

  • NVQ 3 or City and Guilds 706/1 and 706/2
  • Intermediate certificate in Food Hygiene or willing to work towards it

Successful appointment will be dependent upon:

  • Enhanced DBS check (including photo ID check)
  • Confirmation of right to work in the UK
  • Satisfactory references (2 references required – comments on suitability to work with under 18s will be sought)
