Vehicle Mechanics

Essential Responsibilities:

Performs organizational, intermediate level maintenance/modifications on military equipment, sub-systems, support equipment and related systems such as 5 Ton / 10 Ton 20 Trucks, cranes, pumps, compressors, and a wide assortment of wheel vehicles including trailers.

Diagnoses system malfunctions, isolate causes, and correct deficiencies.

Dismantles and reassembles equipment, using Technical Manuals (TM), lifting devices, hand and pneumatic tools.

Inspects, repairs, and replaces components, engines, transmissions, and sub-assemblies.

Trains team members in solving unusual maintenance problems by analysis and troubleshooting. Identifies parts in repair manuals and places order request for needed parts.

May direct workers engaged in cleaning parts and assisting with assembly and disassembly of equipment, may adjust and maintain machinery such as stripping and loading shovels, drilling and cutting machines, and any other related machinery.

Recommends revisions to maintenance procedures to improve efficiency and ensure quality workmanship.

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands

Work is performed in a shop environment that is moderately lighted, heated and ventilated, is exposed to disagreeable fumes and to cuts and bruises from using tools in close placed and hazards of moving vehicles such as forklifts and sweepers in shop area. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, and taste or smell. Frequently lifts items weighing 40-45 pounds and occasionally in excess of 50 pounds. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, extreme heat, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud, or may include unsafe conditions, questioning nonstandard operations or environmental factors that may involve unmitigated hazards, and providing feedback to supervisors and managers on all safety issues.

Performs Preventive Maintenance Checks and Services (PMCS) on equipment (Equipment Inspection and Maintenance Worksheet) and reports any faults.

Must be able to speak, read, write, and understand English.

Truck mechanics, also known as diesel services technicians and mechanics, perform a variety of tasks on heavy-duty trucks, large construction vehicles, buses and tractor trailers. They inspect, diagnose and repair brake systems, engines, electrical components, steering systems, transmissions and tires. Truck mechanics work for general and specialized freight companies, bus companies, truck manufacturers, local government agencies and repair shops. Physical strength, diagnostic skill, manual dexterity and the ability to work in noisy environments are the key traits.

Job Skills And Qualifications

Truck Mechanic Job Specifications

  • Must have completed standard mechanic certification program
  • Two years of experience working as a mechanic required, four years preferred
  • Good physical strength, grip strength, dexterity, flexibility and endurance
  • Critical thinking, analysis and evaluation abilities
