Maintenance Technician / Operative Job Description
Workers-Direct is partnering with leading manufacturing, logistics, and facilities management companies in the Wigan WN1 area to recruit proactive and hands-on Maintenance Technicians and Operatives. This role is critical for ensuring the smooth, safe, and efficient operation of industrial equipment, production machinery, and site facilities. Successful candidates will be responsible for performing planned preventative maintenance (PPM), reacting swiftly to breakdowns, and supporting continuous operational improvement.
As a trusted recruitment and staffing agency with deep roots in the North West, we specialise in connecting skilled tradespeople with reputable local employers. Whether you're seeking a short-term assignment to bridge a gap or a longer-term role with potential for permanency, registering with Workers-Direct gives you access to vetted opportunities that match your skills and career goals. Our process is designed for speed and transparency, much like the services detailed in our guide on mastering temp job agencies.
Core Responsibilities & Duties
- Carrying out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) on a wide range of mechanical and electrical plant equipment, including conveyors, pumps, motors, and HVAC systems, to minimise unplanned downtime.
- Responding promptly and effectively to machinery breakdowns, diagnosing faults using technical manuals and diagnostic tools, and executing safe, efficient repairs to restore production.
- Performing basic fabrication, welding, and mechanical fitting work as required for modifications, installations, or repair tasks, ensuring all work meets quality and safety standards.
- Completing accurate maintenance logs, work orders, and spare parts inventories using computerised maintenance management systems (CMMS) or paper-based systems.
- Adhering strictly to all Health & Safety regulations, including LOLER, PUWER, and site-specific safe systems of work (SSOW), conducting dynamic risk assessments for all tasks.
- Supporting site operations with general labouring and operative duties during peak periods or as part of a flexible multi-skilled team, which may include minor building fabric maintenance.
- Identifying and reporting recurring issues or opportunities for improvement, contributing ideas to enhance equipment reliability, efficiency, and safety.
- Liaising professionally with production staff, site managers, and external contractors to coordinate maintenance activities with minimal disruption to operations.
Essential Skills & Qualifications
Proven Experience: A minimum of 1-2 years in a hands-on maintenance, engineering, or operative role within an industrial, manufacturing, warehouse, or facilities environment.
Technical Aptitude: Strong practical skills with hand tools, power tools, and a good understanding of mechanical principles. Basic electrical competency (e.g., fault finding, component replacement) is highly desirable.
Safety-Conscious Mindset: A demonstrable commitment to safe working practices. Relevant safety certifications (e.g., CSCS, IOSH, Manual Handling) are a significant advantage.
Reliability & Flexibility: Must be reliable, punctual, and willing to work various shifts (days, afters, nights, weekends) as required by the client. A full UK driving licence is preferred for some roles.
Problem-Solving Ability: A logical and proactive approach to fault-finding and repair, with the initiative to work independently as well as part of a team.
Don't have every qualification? We still encourage you to apply. Workers-Direct values attitude and potential. We can help you find roles that match your current skill level and offer pathways for development, similar to the opportunities explored in our resource on warehouse career tools.

The specific duties can vary from maintaining conveyor systems and forklifts to servicing factory plant equipment and performing building fabric repairs.
While formal qualifications like an NVQ in Engineering or a City & Guilds are highly valued and can command higher pay, many of our operative and technician roles are accessible with proven hands-on experience. Employers often prioritise a strong practical aptitude, a good attitude, and safety awareness. If you have experience as a handy person, in vehicle maintenance, or in any mechanical trade, you may be well-suited. We assess each candidate individually – if you're unsure, just apply and talk to us.
Shift patterns vary by client. Common patterns include: Day shifts (e.g., 6am-2pm, 8am-4pm, 9am-5pm), Afternoon/Back shifts (e.g., 2pm-10pm), and Night shifts (e.g., 10pm-6am). Some sites operate 4-on-4-off or continental shift patterns. We also have part-time and weekend-only roles. During registration, we will discuss your availability and match you with shifts that suit your lifestyle. For more on flexible work, see our guide on part-time jobs in Wigan.
You will be paid an agreed hourly rate by Workers-Direct. After each week's work, you (or sometimes your site supervisor) submit a timesheet, usually via a mobile app or online portal, by a specified deadline (e.g., Monday morning). Once approved, you are paid weekly, typically every Friday, directly into your bank account. Your payslip will detail your hours, rate, holiday pay accrual, and any deductions. The process is simple and transparent.
Absolutely. A significant number of our temporary placements evolve into temp-to-perm or direct permanent opportunities. Employers use temporary assignments as an extended working interview. If you demonstrate reliability, skill, and a good fit with the team, they will often offer a permanent contract. We actively encourage and facilitate this transition. Explore more about this pathway on our dedicated temporary to permanent jobs page.
