When a school needs temporary support staff, compliance is not optional — it is the foundation of every safe placement. Schools, academies, and multi-academy trusts across the UK face a persistent challenge: finding education support workers who are not only qualified and experienced but who have also been fully vetted through Enhanced DBS checks, reference verification, and safeguarding training before they set foot in a classroom.

Workers Direct exists to solve that problem. As a specialist education staffing agency, we supply DBS checked school support staff for every role from general teaching assistants and learning support assistants through to specialist SEN 1:1 support, pastoral support workers, behaviour mentors, cover supervisors, and HLTAs. Every candidate passes through our rigorous safer recruitment process, and every placement is backed by documentation your school administrator needs for the Single Central Record and Ofsted readiness.

Whether you manage school admin jobs, oversee education admin jobs, or coordinate staffing for an entire multi-academy trust, this guide walks you through everything you need to know about hiring compliant temporary school support staff — from understanding DBS check levels to booking same-day cover.

★ What Are DBS Checked School Support Staff?

DBS checked school support staff are temporary or permanent education workers who have undergone Disclosure and Barring Service checks before being placed in schools. For roles involving direct, regular contact with children — such as teaching assistants, SEN support workers, and pastoral support workers — an Enhanced DBS check with children's barred list verification is required. Workers Direct ensures all school support staff hold the correct DBS clearance level before any placement begins.

What We Supply

Workers Direct provides a comprehensive range of school support staff across four core areas. Every member of staff we place has been through our full safer recruitment process and holds an Enhanced DBS check as standard.

📚 Classroom Support

General teaching assistants, learning support assistants, and classroom support workers for primary and secondary settings. Staff support learning activities, manage small group work, and provide 1:1 scaffolding under teacher direction.

🤝 Pastoral & Behaviour Support

Pastoral support workers and behaviour mentors trained in de-escalation, restorative approaches, and emotional regulation. Ideal for schools managing challenging behaviour or supporting pupils with social, emotional, and mental health needs.

🎓 SEN Support

Specialist SEN teaching assistants and 1:1 support workers experienced in autism, ADHD, speech and language needs, physical disabilities, and moderate-to-severe learning difficulties. Staff with Cache Level 4 and Teaching Assistant NVQ Level 3 qualifications available.

📝 Exam & Invigilation Support

Exam invigilators and access arrangement support for GCSE, A-Level, and internal assessment periods. Staff trained in JCQ regulations, reader/scribe requirements, and exam room protocols.

Who We Support

Our education staffing services cover the full spectrum of school settings across the UK. Whether you are a small village primary school or a large multi-academy trust with dozens of sites, Workers Direct has the infrastructure and candidate pool to meet your requirements.

Setting Type Typical Roles Supplied Key Requirements
Primary Schools Teaching assistants, SEN TAs, pastoral support Enhanced DBS, phonics/early reading awareness
Secondary Schools Learning support assistants, cover supervisors, behaviour mentors Enhanced DBS, subject-area familiarity, behaviour management
SEN Schools & Units Specialist SEN TAs, 1:1 support, clinical support workers Enhanced DBS with barred list, specialist SEN training
Academies & MATs All support staff roles, HLTAs, admin support staff Trust-level compliance, centralised booking
PRUs / Alternative Provision Behaviour mentors, pastoral workers, education support workers Enhanced DBS, de-escalation training, resilience

Each setting has unique requirements, and our matching process accounts for this. A teaching assistant who thrives in a calm, structured primary classroom may not be the best fit for a secondary PRU — and vice versa. We make sure the match works for your environment, your pupils, and your existing team. Learn more about why schools choose Workers Direct.

Roles We Can Provide

Workers Direct recruits and places a wide range of school support staff roles. Each role requires specific qualifications, experience, and DBS check levels. Below is a detailed overview of the positions we fill for schools across the UK.

A specialist education staffing agency like Workers Direct can supply temporary and permanent school support staff including general teaching assistants, SEN teaching assistants and 1:1 support workers, learning support assistants, behaviour mentors, pastoral support workers, higher-level teaching assistants (HLTAs), and cover supervisors. All roles require Enhanced DBS checks with barred list verification for work in regulated activity with children.

If your school has a specific staffing need that falls outside these standard roles, submit a staffing request and our education team will work with you to find the right candidate.

Compliance First: What "DBS Checked" Really Means

The phrase "DBS checked" is used widely in education recruitment, but not all DBS checks are equal. Schools need to understand the different levels and what each covers to ensure their temporary staff placements are fully compliant with Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) statutory guidance.

★ What Are the Three Levels of DBS Check for School Staff?

The three DBS check levels relevant to school support staff are: Basic DBS (unspent convictions only, suitable for non-regulated roles), Enhanced DBS (Police National Computer plus local police records, for roles with regular contact with children), and Enhanced DBS with barred list check (the highest level, mandatory for all regulated activity roles such as teaching assistants, SEN support workers, and pastoral staff). Workers Direct processes Enhanced DBS with barred list checks for all education placements.

DBS Level What It Checks When Required in Schools
Basic DBS Unspent convictions only Non-regulated support roles (e.g. office admin, facilities administrator)
Enhanced DBS PNC records + local police intelligence Roles with regular contact with children but not regulated activity
Enhanced DBS + Barred List PNC + local police + children's barred list All regulated activity: TAs, SEN TAs, pastoral workers, behaviour mentors, HLTAs, cover supervisors

Workers Direct does not cut corners on compliance. Before any temporary education support worker is placed in a school, we verify their Enhanced DBS with barred list check, confirm their identity against original documentation, verify their right to work in the UK, and validate their employment history and professional references. This is not a box-ticking exercise — it is the foundation of child safety, and we treat it as such.

We also register candidates with the DBS Update Service where possible, allowing us to run instant online status checks that confirm a certificate remains current. This reduces placement lead times without compromising on the thoroughness of our vetting process.

Our Safer Recruitment Checks: Process Overview

Workers Direct follows a structured safer recruitment process aligned with KCSIE statutory guidance and the recommendations of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC). Every candidate goes through six verification stages before they are approved for school placements.

★ What Safer Recruitment Checks Should a School Staffing Agency Perform?

A compliant school staffing agency should perform six core checks before placing any education support worker: identity verification against original documents, right to work in the UK confirmation, Enhanced DBS with barred list verification (or Update Service check), full employment history review with gap explanations, professional reference checks covering the most recent two years, and verification of relevant qualifications including safeguarding training. Workers Direct completes all six checks as standard for every school placement.

1

Identity Verification

We verify identity against original documents including passport, driving licence, or birth certificate plus proof of address. This meets the DBS identity-checking guidelines and ensures the person is who they claim to be.

2

Right to Work in the UK

We conduct right to work checks in accordance with Home Office guidance, including online share code verification for those with biometric residence permits or EU settled/pre-settled status.

3

DBS Verification & Update Service

Enhanced DBS with children's barred list check is verified for every education placement. Where candidates are registered with the DBS Update Service, we conduct an online status check before each new placement to confirm no changes since the certificate was issued.

4

Employment History & References

We obtain a full employment history with explanations for any gaps. Professional references covering a minimum of two years are obtained and verified, with specific questions about suitability for working with children.

5

Qualification Checks

Where required, we verify qualifications against original certificates. This includes Teaching Assistant NVQ Level 3, Cache Level 4 Teaching Assistant, HLTA status, and any specialist SEN or behaviour management certifications.

6

Safeguarding Training & Awareness

All candidates complete safeguarding awareness training before placement, covering child protection procedures, recognising signs of abuse and neglect, and understanding the Prevent duty. Refresher training is maintained annually.

How to Hire Temporary School Support Staff Compliantly: Step-by-Step

Whether you are a headteacher, school business manager, or school administrator responsible for coordinating staffing, this step-by-step process ensures your temporary placements are fully compliant with statutory requirements and Ofsted expectations.

Step 1: Define the Role and Level of Supervision

Specify the duties clearly. Will the support staff member work under direct teacher supervision, or will they operate independently with small groups? Clarify whether the role involves regulated activity, intimate care, or 1:1 work with vulnerable pupils.

Step 2: Confirm the DBS Check Level Required

For most school support staff roles, an Enhanced DBS with children's barred list check is required. If the role is purely administrative (such as a school secretary or facilities administrator with no pupil contact), a Basic or Standard DBS may suffice.

Step 3: Agree Start Date, Hours, and Key Risks

Confirm when you need staff to start, the daily hours required, and any specific risk factors. If the role involves SEN support, behaviour management, off-site activities, or intimate care, communicate this upfront so we can match appropriately.

Step 4: Confirm Site Induction Requirements

Provide your school's safeguarding induction pack, fire safety procedures, behaviour policy, first aid arrangements, and any site-specific protocols. Every temporary staff member must complete a school induction before working with pupils.

Step 5: Ensure Audit-Ready Record Keeping

Update your Single Central Record with the compliance documentation Workers Direct provides. We supply a comprehensive compliance pack for each placement including DBS certificate details, right to work evidence, references, qualifications, and safeguarding training confirmation — everything your school office administration team needs for Ofsted readiness.

Have a role to fill right now? Post your staffing requirement and we will begin matching immediately.

Matching: Getting the Right Person, Not Just a Warm Body

Schools tell us their biggest frustration with temporary staffing agencies is receiving candidates who technically meet compliance requirements but are not the right fit for the environment or the pupils. At Workers Direct, compliance is the baseline, not the endpoint. Our matching process goes further.

★ How Does a School Staffing Agency Match the Right Support Staff?

Effective school support staff matching considers four factors beyond basic compliance: relevant experience by key stage and SEN need, compatible behaviour management style, ability to provide consistency for vulnerable pupils, and local availability for continuity of cover. Workers Direct evaluates all four criteria alongside DBS verification to ensure each placement supports both pupil outcomes and school operations.

We match based on these four key dimensions:

Experience by Key Stage and SEN Need. A teaching assistant with five years of KS1 experience will approach scaffolding and differentiation very differently from someone who has worked primarily in KS4. Similarly, an SEN support worker experienced in autism spectrum condition will use different strategies from one whose background is in physical disabilities. We ask detailed questions about candidates' experience and match them to the specific context of your school.

Behaviour Management Style. Some schools favour a strict, structured approach while others use restorative practice or therapeutic models. We learn your school's behaviour policy and ethos, then match staff whose approach aligns with it. This is particularly important for pastoral support workers and behaviour mentors, where a mismatch in style can undermine the school's approach.

Consistency for Vulnerable Pupils. Children with SEN, attachment difficulties, or social-emotional needs often struggle with changes in personnel. Where possible, we prioritise sending the same staff member back to your school, maintaining the relationships and routines that support pupil wellbeing and progress.

Local Availability and Continuity Cover. We maintain a strong pool of education support workers in each locality to minimise travel time and increase the likelihood of sending a familiar face. If you need ongoing cover — whether for maternity leave, long-term sickness, or a phased recruitment process — we can assign a consistent placement who gets to know your school inside out. Browse our current school support staff vacancies to see the breadth of roles we cover.

Day-One Readiness: What Your Temp Can Do Immediately

A well-matched, DBS checked school support staff member from Workers Direct arrives ready to contribute from their first hour in your school. Following your site induction, they can typically undertake the following tasks on day one.

Support Learning Activities

Work alongside the class teacher to deliver planned activities, support small group work, and provide in-lesson differentiation for pupils working below or above expected levels.

1:1 Prompting & Scaffolding

Provide individual support to pupils with SEN or additional needs, using prompting strategies, visual aids, and structured scaffolding as directed by the class teacher or SENCo.

Break & Lunch Duty Support

Supervise pupils during break and lunch periods where agreed, supporting positive play, resolving minor conflicts, and ensuring safety in communal areas and playgrounds.

De-escalation Support

Support pupils experiencing emotional dysregulation using trained de-escalation techniques within the boundaries of their training and your school's behaviour policy.

Notes & Feedback

Provide written or verbal feedback to the class teacher or pastoral lead on pupil engagement, progress, behaviour, and any concerns observed during the day.

Case Study 1

Multi-Academy Trust Reduces Supply Spend by 32% While Improving Safeguarding Compliance

Client:

A multi-academy trust with 14 schools across the West Midlands, encompassing primary, secondary, and SEN settings with a combined pupil roll of over 8,500.

Challenge:

The trust was using five different temp agencies for school support staff, resulting in inconsistent compliance standards, duplicated costs, and frequent mismatches between supply staff and school environments. Their Ofsted preparedness audit identified gaps in Single Central Record entries for temporary staff across seven of their fourteen sites. School administrators and school office administration teams were spending excessive time chasing compliance documentation from multiple agencies.

Solution:

Workers Direct was appointed as the sole preferred supplier for all temporary education support staff across the trust. We implemented a centralised compliance framework with a single point of contact, standardised documentation delivery, and a dedicated admin booking system integrated with the trust's existing school admin processes. Every candidate was screened through our full safer recruitment process, and compliance packs were delivered directly to each school's admin team in a format ready for Single Central Record entry.

Results:

✓   32% reduction in annual supply staffing costs through consolidated rates and reduced admin overhead

✓   100% Single Central Record compliance across all 14 sites within the first term

✓   94% placement satisfaction rating from headteachers and SENCos

✓   Same-day fill rate of 97% for urgent support staff requests

✓   4 temp-to-perm conversions in the first academic year, saving recruitment costs

"Workers Direct transformed our approach to temporary staffing. The compliance documentation is impeccable, the matching is thoughtful, and our school admin teams no longer spend hours chasing paperwork. When Ofsted visited two of our schools last year, the inspector commented on the thoroughness of our Single Central Record for agency staff." — Trust HR Director, West Midlands MAT

Case Study 2

SEN Primary School Secures Consistent 1:1 Support for Complex Needs Pupil

Client:

A two-form entry primary school in South London with a resourced provision for pupils with autism spectrum condition, serving 420 pupils including 12 with EHCPs requiring 1:1 support.

Challenge:

A Year 4 pupil with complex autism, sensory processing difficulties, and communication needs lost their dedicated 1:1 SEN teaching assistant mid-term due to unexpected long-term sickness. The school had tried two temporary SEN support workers from other agencies, but neither had the specialist experience needed. The pupil's behaviour escalated significantly, and the school was at risk of not meeting the provision outlined in the pupil's EHCP. The school administrator and SENCo were under significant pressure to find a compliant, experienced replacement quickly.

Solution:

Workers Direct sourced a specialist SEN teaching assistant with six years of experience working with pupils with autism, including training in PECS communication, sensory integration strategies, and Positive Behaviour Support (PBS). The candidate held a Cache Level 4 Teaching Assistant qualification, an Enhanced DBS with barred list check verified through the Update Service, and had completed advanced safeguarding training. We briefed the candidate on the pupil's specific needs, triggers, and communication preferences before the first day, working closely with the SENCo to ensure a smooth transition.

Results:

✓   Placement started within 48 hours of the school's request

✓   Behavioural incidents reduced by 65% within the first three weeks

✓   EHCP provision maintained in full throughout the remainder of the term

✓   Pupil returned to mainstream lessons for 70% of the timetable (up from 40%)

✓   Temp-to-perm conversion — the school offered a permanent contract at the end of the placement

"The difference was immediate. Workers Direct didn't just send someone with the right DBS check — they sent someone who understood our pupil. The handover was thorough, the compliance documentation was ready before the start date, and the match was exceptional. We've since used Workers Direct for all our SEN temporary staffing." — SENCo, Primary School, South London

What Schools Say About Team Workers Direct

★★★★★

"Team Workers Direct has been our go-to agency for temporary teaching assistants and SEN support workers for over two years now. The compliance is watertight — every single placement arrives with a full documentation pack that our school secretary can enter straight into the Single Central Record. What sets them apart is the quality of matching. They take the time to understand our school ethos and the specific needs of our pupils, and it shows in the calibre of staff they send. I would not hesitate to recommend them to any school looking for reliable education support staff."

Sarah Mitchell

Headteacher, Academy Primary School, Birmingham

★★★★★

"We had an urgent need for a behaviour mentor following a staff resignation with no notice period. I called Team Workers Direct at 7:15am and had a fully DBS checked, experienced behaviour mentor in school by 9:30am the same morning. The candidate had worked in PRU settings and understood de-escalation techniques, restorative practice, and our trauma-informed approach from day one. The admin booking process was seamless, and the compliance paperwork was emailed to our school admin team before the candidate even arrived. Truly outstanding service."

James O'Brien

Assistant Headteacher, Secondary School, Manchester

★★★★★

"As a SENCo managing 18 EHCPs with varying levels of 1:1 support, finding reliable temporary SEN support workers is a constant challenge. Team Workers Direct consistently provides staff who not only have the right qualifications — NVQ Level 3, specialist autism training, Team Teach — but who also genuinely connect with our pupils. The consistency is remarkable: when we request the same person for ongoing cover, Workers Direct makes it happen. Our school administrator no longer dreads compliance audits because the documentation from Workers Direct is always complete and audit-ready."

Dr Priya Kaur

SENCo, SEN Resource Base, Leeds

★★★★★

"We switched to Team Workers Direct after our previous agency sent a teaching assistant who turned out not to have a valid Enhanced DBS. That experience was deeply concerning and prompted us to find an agency that takes safeguarding as seriously as we do. Workers Direct has been faultless. Every candidate comes with verified Enhanced DBS with barred list, confirmed references, safeguarding training evidence, and right to work documentation. Their support staff have slotted into our classrooms beautifully, and several have converted to permanent roles. The temp-to-perm pathway saved us thousands in separate recruitment costs."

Frequently Asked Questions

★ Who Handles Single Central Record Entries for Temporary Agency Staff?

The school remains responsible for maintaining the Single Central Record, but the staffing agency should provide all required documentation. Workers Direct supplies a comprehensive compliance pack for each temporary school support staff placement, including Enhanced DBS certificate details, right to work evidence, identity verification, references, qualifications, and safeguarding training records. Your school administrator, school secretary, or school office administration team can use this pack to update the SCR directly.

What DBS level do we need for temporary school support staff?

Most school support staff roles require an Enhanced DBS check with children's barred list verification. This includes teaching assistants, SEN support workers, learning support assistants, pastoral support workers, behaviour mentors, cover supervisors, and HLTAs. Workers Direct processes Enhanced DBS with barred list checks for all education placements as standard. For non-regulated roles such as school office admin or facilities administrator positions with no unsupervised pupil contact, a Basic DBS may be sufficient — but we always recommend discussing the specific role requirements with your designated safeguarding lead.

Can Workers Direct supply staff with barred list checks?

Yes. Enhanced DBS with children's barred list verification is our standard for all education support staff placements. We verify barred list checks before any candidate is approved for school work, and we use the DBS Update Service where possible to maintain current checks between placements.

What if a temporary placement needs to be extended?

Extensions are straightforward. Contact your Workers Direct account manager or use the admin booking system to request an extension. We confirm the existing DBS check and compliance documentation remain current, update our records, and coordinate with your school office administration team to ensure the Single Central Record is kept up to date. There is no need to re-process compliance checks for the same candidate on an ongoing placement.

Can we request specific SEN experience for temporary support staff?

Absolutely. We match SEN support workers based on specific experience including autism spectrum condition, ADHD, speech and language needs, physical and sensory impairments, social emotional and mental health needs (SEMH), and moderate-to-severe learning difficulties. You can also request candidates with specific qualifications such as Cache Level 4 Teaching Assistant, Teaching Assistant NVQ Level 3, Team Teach, PECS, Makaton, or other specialist SEN training.

Who handles the Single Central Record entry for temporary staff?

The school maintains the Single Central Record as a statutory requirement. Workers Direct provides all the documentation your school admin team needs to complete the SCR entry, delivered in a clear compliance summary format. This includes DBS certificate reference number and date, right to work evidence, identity verification records, reference confirmation, qualification certificates, and safeguarding training evidence. We can also work with your school administrator to establish a streamlined process for regular placements.

What is the notice and cancellation policy?

We understand that schools operate in unpredictable environments. Same-day cancellations made before 7:00am incur no charge. For ongoing placements, we appreciate 48 hours' notice where possible to allow us to offer the staff member alternative work. Emergency cover and next-day placements are available at standard rates with no additional surcharges. For detailed terms, speak with your dedicated Workers Direct account manager.
