Key Responsibilities

  • Laying bricks, blocks, and stone to construct walls, arches, chimneys, and other structural elements according to technical specifications and architectural plans. This includes measuring, cutting, and shaping materials with precision tools to ensure accurate alignment and durability.
  • Mixing and applying mortar using correct ratios of cement, sand, and water to create strong bonds. You'll need to maintain consistency, apply mortar evenly with trowels, and clean excess to achieve a professional finish, all while adhering to weather conditions and material guidelines.
  • Reading and interpreting blueprints and construction drawings to determine layout, dimensions, and materials required. This involves collaborating with site managers and other trades to coordinate tasks, avoid conflicts, and ensure projects meet building regulations and client expectations.
  • Operating tools and equipment safely, including power saws, levels, drills, and scaffolding. You must follow health and safety protocols, conduct risk assessments, wear PPE, and maintain equipment to prevent accidents and ensure a secure working environment on Reading construction sites.
  • Supervising and mentoring junior staff or labourers, providing guidance on techniques and safety. This may involve training apprentices, delegating tasks, and ensuring team productivity, which contributes to efficient project timelines and high-quality outcomes.

What We're Looking For

  • Proven experience as a Bricklayer with at least 2-3 years in the construction industry, preferably in the Reading or Thames Valley region. A portfolio showcasing completed projects, such as residential builds or commercial renovations, will strengthen your application.
  • Relevant certifications and qualifications, including a valid CSCS card, NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Bricklaying, and any additional tickets for scaffolding or plant operation. These credentials demonstrate compliance with UK construction standards and enhance employability.
  • Strong technical knowledge of different bricklaying techniques, materials (e.g., clay bricks, concrete blocks), and bonding patterns (e.g., stretcher, English bond). You should understand thermal insulation, damp-proofing, and modern construction methods to adapt to various project requirements.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills, with the ability to work independently or as part of a crew. Reliability, punctuality, and a proactive attitude are essential, along with problem-solving abilities to address on-site challenges efficiently.
