Job Description: Maintenance Technician / Operative

Workers Direct is partnering with leading manufacturing, logistics, and facilities management companies in the Dundee DD1 area to recruit proactive and skilled Maintenance Technicians / Operatives. This is a pivotal role ensuring the smooth, safe, and efficient operation of plant machinery, building systems, and equipment. Successful candidates will be integral to preventative maintenance programmes and rapid response repairs, minimising downtime and supporting continuous production.

By applying through Workers Direct, you gain access to exclusive roles with employers who value skilled labour. We handle the admin, offer weekly payments, and provide a dedicated consultant who understands the local industrial landscape in Dundee, much like we do for Warehouse Jobs in Luton or Construction Jobs in Liverpool. Whether you're seeking an immediate start or a long-term career move, we bridge the gap between talented operatives and reputable businesses.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducting routine preventative maintenance (PPM) on a range of industrial machinery, conveyor systems, and M&E (Mechanical & Electrical) equipment to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
  • Responding promptly to mechanical and electrical breakdowns, diagnosing faults, and performing effective repairs to minimise operational disruption for clients.
  • Completing accurate maintenance logs, work orders, and safety documentation in line with company and site-specific health & safety protocols, including RAMS (Risk Assessment Method Statements).
  • Assisting with facilities upkeep, which may include basic fabric maintenance, plumbing, lighting, and ensuring a safe working environment, sometimes working alongside a Cleaner / Cleaning Operative team.
  • Supporting site operations which may involve occasional material handling or working in conjunction with a Forklift Driver / Operator to move equipment or parts safely and efficiently.

What We're Looking For

  • Proven experience as a Maintenance Technician, Operative, or in a similar hands-on engineering role within an industrial, manufacturing, or facilities environment.
  • A strong practical understanding of mechanical systems (bearings, drives, pneumatics) and/or basic electrical principles. Formal qualifications (e.g., NVQ, City & Guilds) are a significant advantage.
  • A steadfast commitment to health and safety. Experience working with permits, lock-out tag-out (LOTO), and a clear understanding of COSHH regulations is essential.
  • A reliable, proactive, and problem-solving attitude. You must be able to work independently, as part of a team, and communicate effectively with site managers and other staff.

The Dundee DD1 Industrial Landscape: Where Your Skills Are Needed

Dundee, and specifically the DD1 postcode which encompasses the city centre and key industrial estates, is undergoing a significant period of growth and diversification. While its manufacturing heritage remains strong, new sectors are creating sustained demand for skilled maintenance professionals. Understanding this landscape can help you target your career effectively.

Key Sectors Hiring in DD1

  • Advanced Manufacturing & Biotech: The Dundee Waterfront and West Gourdie Industrial Estate host companies specialising in medical technology, precision engineering, and life sciences. Maintenance here often involves cleanroom environments, complex automation, and sensitive calibration.
  • Logistics & Distribution Hubs: With major retailers and courier services operating from the Myrekirk and Dryburgh areas, there is constant need for technicians to maintain conveyor systems, dock levellers, vehicle fleets, and automated sorting machinery.
  • Facilities Management (FM): The city's large public sector buildings, universities, and commercial offices require operatives for planned maintenance (PPM) of HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, and building fabric, similar to roles we fill for Cleaning Jobs in Leeds.
  • Utilities & Energy: From local water treatment works to supporting renewable energy infrastructure in the region, these roles require a strong emphasis on safety protocols and environmental compliance.

Career Progression Pathways

Starting as a Maintenance Operative in Dundee is often the first step on a rewarding technical career ladder. Workers Direct has a proven track record of supporting candidates as they advance.

Typical Progression Route:

Entry-Level Operative → Skilled Technician → Senior/Multi-Skilled Engineer → Team Leader/Supervisor → Maintenance Manager.

We facilitate this by connecting you with employers who invest in training, such as funding for 18th Edition Wiring Regulations, IPAF, or CompEx certifications. Many of our temp-to-perm placements are explicitly designed with this progression in mind.

A Day in the Life: Case Study from a Dundee Maintenance Technician

To give you a genuine feel for the role, here’s a breakdown of a typical shift for"Mark," a Maintenance Technician placed by Workers Direct at a food production facility in Dundee DD1.

M

Mark's Story

Placed via Workers Direct, November 2025. Started as a temp, offered a permanent contract after 14 weeks.

06:30
Handover & PPM Schedule: Mark starts with a team briefing, reviewing the handover from the night shift. He checks his planned preventative maintenance (PPM) tasks for the day – today it's servicing a series of hydraulic palletisers and checking safety guards on conveyor lines.
08:45
Breakdown Response: An urgent call comes in from packaging: a sealant applicator has failed. Mark diagnoses a faulty solenoid valve on the pneumatic circuit. Using lock-out tag-out (LOTO), he isolates the system, replaces the valve, and tests the function, getting the line running again within 45 minutes.
11:00
Collaboration & Safety: Before lunch, Mark assists a contract electrician with a motor replacement, ensuring the permit-to-work is correctly filled out. He also conducts a weekly check of emergency stop buttons on the factory floor, logging all actions in the computerised maintenance management system (CMMS).
14:30
Project Work & Continuous Improvement: Mark spends the afternoon helping to install a new stainless-steel worktable, fabricated off-site. He provides feedback to the engineering manager on a modification that would make future cleaning easier, demonstrating the proactive mindset that led to his permanent offer.

"Workers Direct didn't just find me a job; they found me the right fit. The site's emphasis on kit and training was exactly what I wanted. My consultant checked in weekly at the start, which made a huge difference."

Skills Demonstrated

  • Mechanical & Pneumatic Fault-Finding

Understanding Your Pay & Contract: A Transparent Guide

We believe in complete clarity. Here’s exactly how pay, holiday, and the temp-to-perm transition work with Workers Direct.

Decoding Your Pay Slip & Benefits

Basic Rate (First 40 hrs): £14.50/hr
Overtime Rate (5 hrs): £18.00/hr
Gross Pay: £ (40*14.50) + (5*18.00) = £670.00

*Example rates only. Your actual rate will be agreed upon before placement.

Your accrued holiday pay can be paid weekly or saved up for when you take leave. We also offer access to pension auto-enrolment schemes. For a deeper dive into flexible work, read our guide on Mastering Temp Job Agencies.

1

Weeks 1-4: Integration & Performance

You settle into the role, demonstrate core competencies, and complete all mandatory site inductions. Your Workers Direct consultant conducts a check-in call.

2

Weeks 5-10: Value Demonstration

You take on more responsibility, perhaps suggesting a small process improvement or showing initiative during a breakdown. The site manager begins to see you as a permanent fixture.

3

Weeks 11-13: Formal Discussion

Workers Direct facilitates a conversation between you and the employer regarding a potential permanent contract. We discuss terms, salary, and benefits to ensure a smooth handover.

4

Offer & Transition

You accept a formal offer of permanent employment. We manage a seamless transition, ensuring all outstanding pay and holiday are settled. You become a direct employee.

Not all assignments lead to permanency, but a significant proportion do. Your attitude and performance are the key drivers.
