For candidates with all documents ready and a valid licence, the process is extremely fast. We can often conduct a phone interview on the same day, followed by a virtual or in-person client interview within 24 hours. Successful candidates have started work within 48 hours of initial contact. The speed depends on your availability and the specific client's requirements. We specialise in immediate start placements, a service we also provide for roles in other regions, as seen with our Immediate Start Roles in Romford.
A significant proportion of our temporary Forklift Operator placements are temp-to-perm. Employers use the initial temporary period to assess a candidate's skills, reliability, and team fit. Demonstrating a strong work ethic, punctuality, and safety consciousness greatly increases your chances of being offered a permanent contract. We actively facilitate this transition and have a dedicated page explaining the benefits: Temporary to Permanent Jobs.
The logistics sector in E14 operates around the clock. Common shift patterns include: Early shifts (06:00 - 14:00), Late shifts (14:00 - 22:00), and Night shifts (22:00 - 06:00). There are also weekend shifts and part-time options. During registration, we discuss your availability and match you with suitable roles. Flexibility can often lead to more hours and higher pay. For insights into managing shift work, explore our resource on Mastering Temp Job Agencies.
While the primary requirement is a valid existing licence, Workers Direct occasionally works with training partners to offer refresher courses or upskilling for specific machinery (e.g., VNA, Bendi) for candidates we are placing into long-term roles. If your licence has recently expired, we can point you towards accredited training centres. Our focus is on placing qualified and experienced personnel swiftly. For employers looking to train staff, we offer comprehensive Warehouse Recruitment solutions.

A Day in the Life: Operating in London's Premier Logistics Hub
Securing a Forklift Driver role in London E14 means becoming part of a critical supply chain that services global finance, retail, and e-commerce. The environment is fast-paced, technologically advanced, and safety-focused. To give you a clearer picture, here’s a breakdown of a typical shift for one of our placed operators at a major Canary Wharf distribution centre.
The shift begins with a 15-minute team briefing at 6:45 AM, where the warehouse manager outlines the day’s priorities: processing inbound containers from the Royal Docks and fulfilling priority orders for central London retail stores. Safety reminders and key performance indicators (KPIs) for loading bay efficiency are reiterated.
Pro Tip from Our Consultants
The most successful operators we place are those who arrive 10 minutes early for their briefing. This demonstrates reliability and gives you time to plan your equipment and route for the day, a trait highly valued by employers for temp-to-perm conversion.

Shift Timeline & Core Activities
Inbound Operations & Put-away
Using a counterbalance forklift, you unload articulated lorries at the goods-in bay. Each pallet is scanned, and you check for damage before transporting it to a temporary holding area. Using a radio frequency (RF) gun, you receive put-away instructions from the Warehouse Management System (WMS) and stow pallets in their designated racking locations, which can be up to 12 metres high in these facilities.
Key Skill Highlight: Spatial awareness and precision driving are crucial to navigate busy loading bays and narrow warehouse aisles efficiently.
Order Picking for Dispatch
You switch to a reach truck for high-level order picking. The WMS sends pick lists to your RF terminal, guiding you to specific locations to retrieve pallets or cases for afternoon dispatches. You work alongside pickers & packers who are building mixed pallets for specific delivery routes. Accuracy in product and quantity selection is paramount to avoid costly errors.
Industry Insight: Many E14 warehouses service"just-in-time" models, meaning a picking error can disrupt a store's entire stock replenishment cycle.
Replenishment & Housekeeping
The final part of the shift involves replenishing picking faces from bulk storage and preparing for the night shift. You conduct a final equipment check and report any maintenance issues. The area is tidied, and any waste packaging is disposed of according to site recycling policies. A handover note is completed for the incoming team.
Pathway to Permanency: Consistently leaving your work area clean and reporting maintenance issues proactively are strong indicators to management that you are a responsible candidate for a permanent Warehouse Operative or Team Leader role.
The E14 Logistics Landscape: Trends Driving Demand
London E14, encompassing Canary Wharf and the Docklands, is not just a financial centre but a logistics powerhouse. Understanding the market forces at play can help you position yourself for the most secure and rewarding opportunities.
The E-commerce & Omni-Channel Boom
The rise of next-day and same-day delivery expectations has transformed warehouses in Poplar and Limehouse into hyper-efficient fulfilment centres. This isn't just about moving pallets; it's about intricate piece-picking and rapid sortation. Forklift operators are increasingly required to work seamlessly with automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and robotic picking systems.
For drivers, this means a growing number of roles involve working with VNA (Very Narrow Aisle) trucks in high-density storage areas to maximise space, a skill that commands a premium pay rate of up to £17+ per hour.
Infrastructure & Cross-River Connectivity
Major infrastructure projects like the Silvertown Tunnel and ongoing upgrades to the Blackwall Tunnel are designed to improve freight movement across the Thames. For operators, this means sites in E14 are becoming even more strategically vital for serving South London and Kent.
Warehouses are investing in larger fleets and more varied equipment (e.g., Bendi and sideloaders) to handle increased throughput. This diversity creates opportunities for operators to upskill and become multi-licensed, significantly boosting their employability and earnings potential with our agency.
Workers Direct Insight: We are seeing a 30% year-on-year increase in client requests for operators certified on multiple truck types, reflecting this trend towards operational flexibility.
From Temp Driver to Warehouse Supervisor: Mark's Journey
Mark registered with Workers Direct in early 2023 with a Counterbalance licence and 8 months of experience. We placed him in a temp role at a cold storage facility in Docklands. He consistently demonstrated initiative, volunteering for inventory checks and assisting with new starter inductions.
Within seven months, due to his reliability and proactive approach to health and safety, the client offered him a permanent position. Six months later, he was promoted to a shift supervisor role. Mark's story exemplifies the temp-to-perm pathway we facilitate.
"Workers Direct didn't just find me a job; they found me a career path. The ongoing support from my consultant was key."
Maximising Your Earnings & Career in Logistics
Your pay rate as a Forklift Operator is influenced by several factors. Beyond the basic hourly wage, understanding these can help you strategically increase your income.
1Licence Specialisation
While a standard Counterbalance licence is essential, adding certifications dramatically increases your value.
- Reach Truck: Adds £0.50 - £1.50 p/h.
- VNA / Bendi: Can add £1.50 - £2.50 p/h for niche roles.
- PPT / Pedestrian Pallet Truck: Often required for smaller sites.
2Shift Pattern Strategy
Your willingness to work certain shifts directly impacts your weekly take-home pay.
3Career Ladder Progression
Think beyond the driver's seat. Demonstrating leadership and additional skills can open doors to higher-paying permanent positions.
Workers Direct provides performance feedback to clients, actively advocating for suitable candidates to climb this ladder.
By partnering with a specialist agency like Workers Direct, you gain an advocate who understands these nuances. We don't just fill a vacancy; we assess your skills, discuss your career goals, and match you with roles that offer the right blend of immediate income and long-term potential in the vibrant E14 logistics sector.
